2020/21 season rating and thoughts about whether they should stay or leave the club in the summer:Part 1 goalkeeper and defenders.

2020/21 season finally came to the end and what a roller-coaster season it was for Chelsea as there have been up and down for the whole season but eventually Chelsea ends their season in a very high as they became the Champions of Europe by beating Manchester City in 2020/21 Champions League. Now we are the champions of Europe and we are top of the world at this moment but how the players have fared in the whole season under 2 different managers. Whether they have been top or bottom in terms of their performance throughout the season and all the players will be rated by their performance in all competitions this season. Here is the players rating for the 2020/21 season, also I will give my thoughts that whether I will keep them or sell them this summer from my perspective and also practically whether the player will stay or leave in the summer.

Goal Keepers

Kepa Arrizabalaga (Squad number-1) AGE; 26 YEARS

He was having a poor season previously was expecting that he will improve this season but it's proven wrong. He was again very sloppy in goal as his mistakes continually cost the game for Chelsea. After the arrival of Édouard Mendy, Kepa became the 2nd choice keeper for Chelsea. After the arrival of Tuchel, Kepa played some of the league games, and also he was the main keeper for Chelsea in the FA Cup as he showed a sign of improvement under Thomas Tuchel. But overall it’s not a good outcome for him this season as now Mendy is the 1st choice goalkeeper for Chelsea.

2020/21 Stats- 14 appearances, 6 clean sheets.

Rating-4/10

Sell him or Keep him; My Perspective- he showed signs of improvement after the arrival of Thomas Tuchel but for sure he will be just a backup keeper for Chelsea. As a backup option, I will keep him.

Practical View- Seemed like Thomas Tuchel having some faith in Kepa that’s the reason why he picks him for the FA Cup final. Therefore for now practically Kepa will stay with Chelsea.

Willy Caballero (13) AGE;39 YEARS

Played only one game for Chelsea this season therefore can’t really rate him and also he is leaving the club after his contract expires in July. I wish him the best of luck for his future and he has been a good servant for this club since he arrived back in 2017.

Édouard Mendy(16) AGE; 28 YEARS

The Chelsea’s Number 1 Goal Keeper and what a difference he made to the team since his arrival last summer. Only Ederson has kept more clean-sheet than Mendy in the premier league and also he is the goalkeeper with a more clean sheet in the Champions League as he kept 9 clean sheets with 75% of saving percentage. He also makes so many crucial saves throughout the season and also a crucial member of the squad that won the Champions League this season. He was looking shaky when the team was crumbling during the Christmas and New Year Period but overall Mendy had a successful debut season for Chelsea.

Stats- 44 appearances, 25 clean sheets

Rating- 8/10

There is no question about whether to keep him or sell him, from all perspectives he will stay with Chelsea and probably he will be the No 1 Goalkeeper for Chelsea for the next 5 years.

Defenders

CĂ©sar Azpilicueta(28) Right Back/Centre Back/Right Wing Back- AGE 31 YEARS

Didn’t feature much for the 1st half of the season as James was the 1st choice Right Back under Frank Lampard. And also whenever Azpiliceuta came into the team it was hit and miss display from him, particularly before Lampard gets sacked in the home game against Manchester City, he has torn apart on the right side which was probably one of the worse games in his career. But after the formation change under Thomas Tuchel, Azpilicueta features regularly on the right side of the back 3 also consistently performed well under Tuchel. He frustrated me sometimes because of his poor decision-making and poor passing range but he was again the part of the team that stood out during our champion’s league success this season.

Stats- 43 appearance, 1 goal, 3 assists

Rating- 8/10

Again from all perspectives he will at Chelsea. The Captain of the club needs to be sorting it a certain part of his game side example like the mad things he has done against Aston Villa which resulted in a red card for him and also against Atletico Madrid which he gets away with that.

Reece James (24) Right Back/Right Wing Back- AGE; 21 YEARS

The young full-back was having a good start to the season as he kept producing brilliant displays under Frank Lampard. Again as the whole team, his form dipped during Lampard’s final few weeks as a manager then since the start of the Tuchel era, James left out from the starting 11 for few matches as the German manager favored Hudson Odoi for the wing-back role. But he then earned his place in the starting 11 as he impressed the new manager then was one of the important figures in the team which leads to the Champions League's success.

Stats- 47 appearance, 1 goal, 5 assists

Rating-8/10

He is already establishing himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and he is having the potential to be one of the best defenders in the world. He is from the Chelsea academic as well therefore it will be amazing to create one of our players to be the one of the best and from all perspectives keep him all day long.

Thiago Silva(6) Centre Back- AGE; 36 YEARS

36-year-old warrior is another player who had a brilliant debut season and when he first arrived people questioned about his age also whether he can live up with the pace of the premier league but he proved them wrong. Apart from some shaky spell during the fall down period of the season Silva probably being one of the best defenders in the league and Champions League. He also brings stability and leadership to the Chelsea backline which was a major issue in the previous season also both under Lampard and Tuchel, Silva being an important player in the team. Injuries being an issue with him as he missed almost a month in the whole season but overall even at age 36 Silva being crucial for the end of the season's success.

Stats; 34 appearances, 2 goals

Rating; 8/10

He already signed a year extension with Chelsea and he needs to be here with the club because of his leadership qualities not only that despite he will be 37 this year, Thiago Silva still one best center back in the world therefore from all perceptive keep him.

Kurt Zouma(15) Centre Back- AGE; 26 YEARS

Under Frank Lampard, at the start of the season, Zouma was the first-choice center-back as he continues to impress in the center of the defense. But his form dipped during the stage when the whole team was crumbling and after Tuchel came in his involvement in starling 11 has been reduced as Ruediger starts regularly under the new manager than Zouma. But yet still Zouma played some important games under Tuchel as he put in a couple of good performances out there. Zouma also the highest-scoring defender in the league with 5 goals which showed his presence when Chelsea had the set pieces.

Stats; 36 appearances, 5 goals

Rating; 7/10

Sell him or Keep him; My Perspective-  he was probably the best center back for a certain spell of the beginning of the season but as the season progressed when the team was crumbling Zouma looks all over the place. And now under Tuchel in a 3 at the back system, Zouma seemed to look uncomfortable with that system. Also with other defenders continues to perform better than him Zoumas place in the squad under serious question. Therefore with analyzing all kinds of situations this is the right time to sell him in the summer. We also have some quality center backs on loan as some of them can operate well in the 3 at the system. Therefore I think this is the right time to move him on from the squad.

Practical View- From the rumors, Zouma is one of the players on the transfer list this summer therefore even there is more chance of seeing him leave Chelsea for the right price.

Antonio RĂ¼diger(2) Centre Back- AGE;27 YEARS

The German international was rarely featured in the 1st half of the season as Lampard favored other center-backs than him. But after Tuchel came in we saw a beast in the backline for Chelsea as Rudiger was being immense under the new manager. It might exaggerate to say this but since Thomas Tuchel came in at the end of January, Rudiger probably the best center back in the world since the German's manager arrival based on the performance.

Stats; 35 appearances, 2 goals

Rating; 8/10

He going to be an important player for Chelsea in defense therefore from all perspective keeps him.

Andreas Christensen (4) Centre Back- AGE; 24 YEARS

He was having a poor 1st half of the season under Lampard and during that time he seemed about the leave the club because he was nowhere good enough for this club at that moment. But after Tuchel came in and Silva went off injured for a certain period, Christensen stepped up in a big-time for Chelsea as he produced much outstanding display in the center of the defense. Even I gave a 10/10 for him against Liverpool because he was that good during that time. And yet again he stepped in big-time when Silva went off injured in the final of the Champions League; Christensen came on for him and was part of the defense that pocked the Manchester City attackers in the final.

Stats; 27 appearances, 0 goals

Rating; 8/10

An explanation for the rating; few might raise the eyebrow that how he gets the high rating as this but if I have to give a base on his first half of the season I would give him about 1/2 if under Tuchel he would easily get about 8/9 because he was that good under Tuchel. Therefore rating of 8 I think should be a fair reflection for him from my point of view and so I used the same method for all the players when I rate them for the whole season.

Christensen looks like a new player under Thomas Tuchel and especially Christensen slots well in the 3 at the back system therefore from all perspectives keep him.

Ben Chilwell(21)- Left Back/ Left Wing Back- AGE; 24 YEARS

Another summer signing who had a brilliant debut season for Chelsea as he was probably one of the best players under Frank Lampard, but again his form dipped at the same time when others start to drop out as well. When Tuchel came in Alonso was preferred in the Left Wing Back role but Chilwell then starts to grab the role from Alonso by his impressive attribution to the team from the Wing Back role as another crucial member of the team which succeeded in the Champions League.

Stats; 42 appearances, 4 goals, 7 assists

Rating; 8/10

Since Ashley Cole left Chelsea back in 2014, the left-back was an issue for Chelsea because there is no identical replacement for him as Marcos Alonso was not that good at playing in the left-back as he used to be in Wing Back role. But after the arrival of Ben Chilwell last summer Chelsea finally got the player who can full fill the place that Ashley Cole left, because now Ben Chilwell so good on both Left-back/Left Wing Back roles as from all perspectives keep him all day long.

Marcos Alonso (3) Left Back/ Left Wing Back- AGE; 30 YEARS

After his attitude when he subbed off during the West Brom match back in September all thought this could be the end of Marcos Alonso's career at Chelsea as he didn’t feature until Thomas Tuchel came in. After the arrival of Tuchel Alonso being the front runner for the Wing Back role but later Chilwell starts over Alonso for the wing-back role. Under Tuchel Alonso showed some promising moments whenever he calls upon into the team but overall it’s not a good season for him because he didn’t play regularly for Chelsea as he used to be in previous seasons.

Stats; 17 appearances, 2 goals

Rating; 5/10

Sell him or Keep him; My Perspective- it’s a kind of tough call for me because since now we are playing the 3 at the system, Alonso can produce some performance when he calls upon but for sure Chilwell will be the first choice as Alonso should be a good backup. I would keep him because just for the system we are playing now.

Practical View- As per Rumours Alonso also the player on the transfer list but unless Chelsea gets a proper backup for Chilwell it seemed like Alonso won’t be sold by Chelsea.

Emerson Palmieri(33) Left Back/Left Wing Back- AGE;26 YEARS

Hardly featured The whole season as he picked as the 3rd choice Left Back/Left Wing Back for Chelsea as his one standout moment was the goal he scored against Atletico Madrid after he just came on.

Stats; 15 appearances, 1 goal

Rating; 4/10- just because he didn’t feature much and when he played did nothing extraordinary.

Easy call for him as from all perspectives, it’s time to sell him in the summer as Chelsea now working on the sell him.
